Where to Print a Digital Art Download: Every Option Compared

A digital art file is worth nothing until it is printed. The printing method determines the final size, color accuracy, paper quality, and cost. Here is what each option actually delivers.

Printing at home: limits on paper, ink, and size

Home inkjet printers can produce acceptable quality art prints on the right paper. The constraints: most home printers max out at 8.5x11 inches (letter) or 13x19 inches (if you have a wide-format inkjet). Printer ink cartridges produce a smaller color gamut than professional photo labs, which means less saturated colors and slightly less accurate color rendering.

If you are printing at home, use a heavyweight matte fine-art paper (90 to 120 lb, or 200 to 300 gsm) rather than standard copy paper. The paper has more impact on the result than the resolution. Standard printer paper looks cheap regardless of ink quality.

Cost: near zero per print assuming you have the printer and paper. Quality: adequate for small prints (8x10 or smaller). Limit: you cannot print wall-scale art at home.

FedEx Office / Staples: quick, decent quality, up to 24 inches

FedEx Office (formerly Kinko's) and Staples both offer same-day large-format printing from a file you upload or bring on a USB drive. FedEx maxes out at 24 inches wide at most locations (some locations go wider). Standard output is on glossy or satin poster paper, which is fine for display but not archival-quality fine art.

Cost: roughly $1.50 to $4 per square foot depending on paper and location. A 20x20 inch print runs $4 to $8. A 24x36 runs $8 to $15. Quick turnaround: same-day at most locations if you upload before noon.

FedEx is the right choice for last-minute printing, test prints to check sizing before ordering a professional print, and situations where you need something today. The color accuracy is reasonable but not calibrated for art reproduction specifically.

Costco photo center: cheap, color-accurate

Costco's photo lab produces prints on Fuji Crystal Archive paper using calibrated color processes. For art prints, the color accuracy is notably good relative to the price. Costco prints an 8x10 for under $1.50 and scales up proportionally for larger sizes.

Maximum size at Costco is typically 20x30 inches. Turnaround is usually same-day or next-day depending on location and time of year. Output is a flat photo print, not fine-art paper, but the color rendering is reliable.

For prints up to 20x30 where you want accurate color and low cost, Costco is the strongest value in retail printing. The limitation is the maximum size and the glossy-only finish at most locations.

Local print shop: best quality, slower

A dedicated print shop, as opposed to the print section of an office supply store, uses wide-format inkjet printers with a wider color gamut, more paper choices, and operator attention to color calibration. Options typically include matte, satin, and metallic papers, plus fine-art cotton rag papers for archival-quality output.

Turnaround at a local print shop is usually 2 to 5 business days. Cost for a 24x36 art print on quality paper: $30 to $80 depending on location and paper choice. This is significantly more than FedEx or Costco, but the result, on proper fine-art paper with color calibration, is visibly different from retail options.

For a final piece that you plan to frame and display long-term, a local fine-art print shop is worth the cost difference. For a test print or a casual display piece, it is not necessary.

Professional large-format: for canvas and murals

Canvas printing and wall mural printing requires specialized equipment and substrates that standard print shops do not carry. Online services (Bay Photo, Miller's Lab, Printful, and others) accept uploaded files and print gallery-wrapped canvas in standard sizes up to large format.

If you purchase a digital download from STILL Studio, you can upload the file to any of these services and order the canvas yourself. Alternatively, you can order a pre-made gallery canvas directly from STILL Studio starting at $24.99, which arrives gallery-wrapped and ready to hang.

Wall murals in self-adhesive vinyl require a separate production process. STILL Studio produces murals up to 8x8 ft starting at $89.99 with free shipping.

What to ask for: resolution, paper type, finish

When submitting a file to any print service:

  • Resolution: 150 to 300 DPI at the print size. A 4000x4000 pixel file prints well at 24x24 inches at ~167 DPI. Higher DPI for small prints, lower is acceptable for large formats viewed from distance.
  • Paper: matte for art with rich shadows; satin for balanced color; glossy for maximum saturation; fine-art cotton rag for archival display.
  • Finish: ask for no lamination on canvas (it dulls the surface); lamination adds durability but changes the aesthetic.
  • Color mode: send the file in sRGB, not CMYK. Most digital displays and consumer print labs are calibrated for sRGB.
