Canvas Print vs. Framed Print: Which One to Order

Both formats display the same image. They produce different visual effects, suit different rooms, and have different price structures. The choice is less about quality and more about which aesthetic fits the space.

What gallery-wrapped canvas actually is

Gallery-wrapped canvas is an ink-on-canvas print stretched over a wooden frame (called a stretcher bar) and stapled at the back. The image continues around the edges of the frame, or the edges are printed in a complementary solid color. The result is a frameless piece with visible depth: typically 1.25 to 1.5 inches thick.

It hangs directly on the wall without a frame. The edges are part of the visual, which means the piece looks three-dimensional and slightly sculptural. Gallery canvas is associated with a modern aesthetic. It is also practical: no glass to glare, no frame to dust, and it arrives ready to hang.

Canvas texture is visible in gallery wraps. At viewing distance, this adds tactile interest. Up close, it makes the image look slightly less sharp than a framed print under glass. For photographic images, framed prints under glass typically look crisper. For painterly images, canvas texture adds to the effect.

What a framed print is

A framed print is a flat paper or fine-art paper print, typically matted, placed under glass or acrylic and held in a frame. The frame is a visual border that defines the edge of the image. Matting creates white space between the image and the frame, which adds a gallery-style breathing room.

Framed prints work in traditional, eclectic, and minimalist rooms. The frame itself is a design element: a thin black aluminum frame reads differently than a wide natural wood frame. Frame choice adds a layer of customization that canvas does not offer.

The glass protects the print from dust, humidity, and UV light (if UV-protective glass is used). Properly framed prints outlast gallery canvas prints in terms of color preservation over decades. For long-term display in bright rooms, framed prints with UV glass have an advantage.

Which lasts longer

Both formats last decades when stored and displayed properly. The factors that affect longevity: UV light exposure, humidity, and physical contact.

Gallery canvas is more durable against physical contact (no glass to shatter) and more resistant to humidity damage than framed paper prints. Canvas can be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. It tolerates more casual handling.

Framed prints under UV glass have better color stability in bright rooms. Direct sunlight fades both formats, but UV glass slows the process significantly. Paper prints in humid environments can buckle if not properly sealed and framed.

For practical purposes: both formats, treated reasonably, last longer than most people keep them in the same location.

When to choose canvas vs. framed

Choose canvas when:

  • +The room has a modern or contemporary aesthetic
  • +You want a ready-to-hang, no-frame-needed solution
  • +The image is painterly or abstract
  • +The piece is large (24 in. or wider)
  • +You want no glass glare in a bright room

Choose framed when:

  • +The room is traditional, eclectic, or mid-century
  • +You want to match an existing frame style
  • +The image is photographic or highly detailed
  • +The piece is smaller (under 18 in.)
  • +Long-term color stability is a priority

Cost comparison

At STILL Studio, gallery-wrapped canvas prints start at $24.99 for small formats and scale up based on size. These arrive ready to hang, no additional purchases needed.

For framed prints, the typical path is to purchase a digital download ($9.99) and print at a local lab, then frame independently. A quality frame from IKEA, Target, or a local framer runs $20 to $150 depending on size and style. Total cost for a framed print: $30 to $160 for most standard sizes.

Gallery canvas from a print-on-demand service like STILL Studio is the faster, simpler path. Framing a digital print yourself gives more control over frame style and material at a comparable or higher cost.
